The Philadelphia Flyers will remember the Spectrum when they return to their former home, the Wachovia Spectrum, for a preseason contest against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, September 27 at 1 p.m. Comcast-Spectacor recently announced that this will be the last year of the Wachovia Spectrum at the conclusion of the Philadelphia Phantoms and Philadelphia Kixx, hockey and indoor soccer seasons.
"This will be a wonderful opportunity for thousands of our fans, who used to attend our games at the Spectrum or watch them on TV, to come back one last time and see the Flyers in our old home," said Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider. "It'll also be the last chance for others who may have never seen the Flyers play at the Spectrum. It will be a highly emotional game for me, personally."
"Bringing the Flyers back to the Spectrum for a preseason game will be the perfect start of a season-long celebration of the Spectrum," said Comcast-Spectacor President Peter A. Luukko. "We will continue to bring events to the Spectrum this year to celebrate the wonderful memories and proud tradition of the famous arena."
The Spectrum opened on September 30, 1967 with the Quaker City Jazz Festival. After nearly 40 seasons of Philadelphia Flyers hockey and Philadelphia 76ers basketball, the Spectrum gave way to the Wachovia Center in l996.
The Flyers’ eight-game preseason schedule opens with a game against the New Jersey Devils at the Wachovia Center on Monday, September 22. The Flyers will also face the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, October 1 at the Wachovia Center.
The Flyers will also play the New York Islanders at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario, on Thursday, September 25. The John Labatt Centre is operated and managed by Global Spectrum, the public assembly facility management subsidiary of Flyers’ parent company, Comcast-Spectacor. This will be the Flyers’ fifth trip to London where they have previously played the Washington Capitals (2003), Atlanta Thrashers (2005), Pittsburgh Penguins (2006) and Ottawa Senators (2007).
The Flyers open training camp at The Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, New Jersey on Saturday, September 20. Tickets to the preseason game at the Wachovia Spectrum and all other home preseason games will go on sale in September.
